What is Wellbutrin?

Wellbutrin (bupropion HCI) was first approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1985, and is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The drug was pulled from the market later that year due to the high number of seizures associated with its side effects, but was reintroduced in 1989 after federal reviewers determined that the seizures were dose specific and lowered the daily dosage of the drug.

Wellbutrin is used to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder. In addition, it was approved for use as a smoking cessation aid. It is sold in three different variations: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR (sustained release), and Wellbutrin XI (extended release).

Wellbutrin Birth Defects

Taken prenatally, Wellbutrin can result in serious birth defects. Pregnant women who took Wellbutrin may have children with congenital heart defects. According to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, fetuses exposed to Wellbutrin during early pregnancy are more than twice as likely to be at risk for heart defects. This birth defect requires surgery to be corrected.

In 2006, The New England Journal of Medicine published a study showing that women taking anti- depressants have six times the risk of infants developing persistent pulmonary hypertension of newborn (PPHN), a potentially fatal lung defect. In addition, a 2007 study in the same journal showed that women taking anti-depressants prenatally are more than twice as likely to have infants with skull and intestinal deformities.

The results of a recent medical study suggest that there may be an increased risk of heart birth defects from Wellbutrin when the drug is taken during pregnancy. U.S. researchers and scientists at the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) published the study in the April, 2010 edition of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The study looked at 12,700 children born in the U.S. between 1997 & 2004, and found that mothers who used Wellbutrin during their first trimester were more than twice as likely to give birth to an infant with a congenital heart defect known as a left outflow tract defect. This defect can restrict the flow of blood to the rest of the body from the heart’s left chambers, and often must be surgically corrected to allow the child’s main artery to function properly.
