Meridia Diet Drug Claims

Under close scrutiny since its FDA-approval and release in 1998, the popular Meridia has once again been thrust into the spotlight after a September 2010 report by the New England Journal of Medicine. Meridia Linked to Heart Attacks, Stroke

Meridia, or “sibutramine,” is a popular diet pill manufactured by Knoll Pharmaceuticals. By altering the chemicals in the brain that affect weight maintenance, Meridia is a short-term supplement to diet and exercise for obesity treatment. FDA-approved, and marketed to the U.S. public since 1998, many patients have tried this weight loss option.

Since its release though, Meridia has been connected to an array of adverse reactions and side effects. Though it’s remained on the market, Meridia has been closely scrutinized.

The New England Journal of Medicine’s report showed that Meridia users had a 16 percent greater risk of having a heart attack or stroke than patients taking a placebo. Furthermore, the editors detailed that the side effects associated with the drug far outweigh its possible benefits.

In the strongly worded editorial, they call Meridia “another flawed diet pill.” They note that in return for offering a weight loss of under nine pounds (less than five percent of the body weight of the overweight participants of the study), the drug had a one-in-70 chance of causing a heart attack or stroke.

Since “the modest weight loss with [Meridia] did not translate into clinical benefit,” the editors say, “it is difficult to discern a credible rationale for keeping this medication on the market.”
